Happy Tuesday! I’ve been working away on our entryway makeover. My first project was an IKEA Tarva hack. I am so happy with how that DIY turned out. It has really set the tone for the space and inspired me to continue on and take some chances – starting with a dark painted door and new industrial light.
I’ve seen a lot of painted black doors on Pinterest, my favorite blogs, and even Instagram. However, I never believed they would work for our house. Then, I was inspired when I searched for “painted gray doors” on Pinterest. Black was too bold for our home, but a charcoal gray? I was all over it. Luckily, Joe was on board and I hurried to Lowe’s for some paint samples.
We decided on Valspar’s Mark Twain Gray Brick. Funny name, but great color. It is part of their National Trust for Historic Preservation line. Oatlands Subtle Taupe, our wall color, is also. I like to keep things consistent. I’m the type of girl that buys a favorite pair of jeans in every color, so I guess its no different when it comes to paint.
Using what I learned from Sherry & John at Young House Love, I got to painting and followed the order. Basically, paint inside panels first, then the middle, and lastly the outside. I didn’t use any tape because I’ve gotten pretty good with my short angled brush. I was careful around the knob, hinges, and our security system. It only took two coats and dried fairly quickly.
The before and after is drastic! I’m so glad I had a before picture and created this side by side. After living with the newly painted door for a couple days, I forgot how boring and bland the space was before. I shared this picture on Instagram, and got a few questions about whether I will paint the rest of the doors too. As of now, I am not. I wanted a focal point in the entry and great room, and painting the other doors will take away from this one. It is the tallest door in our house and I want it to be the main focus. I did, however, take some left over paint and touched up my mirror that I previously painted with chalk paint to match the door. Now they match perfectly!
Joe’s brother in law came by and installed this semi-flush mount Industrial Edison Bronze Ceiling Light for us. I ordered it from Lamps Plus on sale for $49 with free shipping a couple months ago. Its perfect for our space – because our front door is so tall, a traditional chandelier or pendant would have been too long and interfered with the door. Even with this light, we only have about a two inch clearance from bottom of light fixture to top of the door. It’s close!
I’m so pleased with how this entryway makeover is coming along. I’ve also ordered a new bench, some artwork, and hooks to finish off the space. If everything goes according to plan, I should be done in a couple weeks to share with you all!
Love the black door! It totally bring everything together! My eye automatically picks up on the dark accent pieces, including that amazing light!! What is funny, we had a black front door and we just changed it to white….. I guess I am the type of person to always be changing something.
