DAY 1 – ORGANIZING HOLIDAY DECOR
Okay, the first day is kind of a big one, but I promise not every day is like this! For me, holiday storage is the area of my home with the MOST stuff and is something I have a lot of struggle with. I love it, but I don’t love storing it all. Hello, plastic bins galore! If you have the same struggle, I have a few simple rules:
- if it didn’t get used this year, donate it
- if it isn’t a part of your style anymore, donate it
- if it simply doesn’t work anymore (broken, discolored, etc), toss it
I found that I use up way too much space in our home storing things I will probably never use again. Why not use those items to give to a family that needs them or can’t afford holiday decor? Maybe gift that special item to a family member that compliments on it every year?
Our own home is very limited on storage. Unfortunately, we don’t have very many closets or a basement to just put all the holiday stuff. Even our garage is very limited in space. So over the years, I’ve had to get creative for storing ALL THE STUFF. I think this is one reason, I try to keep everything simple. Less stuff, less storage.
I actually keep most of our holiday decor in these wooden crates above the washer & dryer in our laundry room. I wanted to keep it pretty, so using the wooden crates looks a little bit better than a bunch of plastic bins sitting up there. 😉 Of course, I can’t keep things like faux pumpkins or faux trees in these crates, so those are still stored elsewhere (garage and closets). However, EVERYTHING ELSE is in these bins. Each season I sort everything and decided what to keep and what to donate.
TASKS FOR TODAY:
- sort holiday storage into piles – to keep and to donate.
- limit your storage space in order to limit the items you keep – be mindful of the space!
- find a creative solution for storing the smaller items – is there an unused area of a shelf or an empty drawer?
Keeping yourself limited on the amount of space you allow for storage will help declutter your holiday decor and your home. Keep the pieces you love and donate the rest!
