Who doesn’t love a good before and after house tour? Even if it isn’t a total gut job or major renovation, before and afters for design styles is fun too. Especially for me, because I love to see how my style has evolved over the years. I’ve never loved our house more than this year. I’m not sure if it’s because we now have more of an appreciation for all things home and what really matters in this crazy year. Or if I have finally just honed my style and feel like my home reflects that.
Obviously, each space has gone through many changes throughout the years. But for the before photos, I tried to pick ones from the first year or so we lived here. My style was also a little different back then. Very farmhouse with browns, creams, and tans. I still like a few farmhouse vibes but in a more modern way. Like a mix of California casual and modern farmhouse styles, so I call my design style California farmhouse.
ENTRYWAY – BEFORE
ENTRYWAY – AFTER
For our entryway, I wanted it to be inviting, beautiful, but above all functional. The biggest change to our home as been our floors. I also added this paneled wall, a new glass front door, and did a makeover on the Ikea hack dresser hack. Our entryway isn’t small but it isn’t large either. So a simple chair instead of a bench works perfectly in this space. And we enjoy all the light pouring in from the front door. The black dressers provide much-needed storage for all our stuff.
LIVING ROOM – BEFORE
LIVING ROOM – AFTER
I don’t have many before pictures of our living room because honestly, I hated it for years. But we made big changes with the DIY builtins, fireplace, and a new furniture layout. We got rid of our old microfiber sectional with reclining seats and replaced them with a linen sofa and two modern recliners from Restoration Hardware. The new furniture arrangement also allowed for a coffee table. I used a bench we already had and covered it in faux black leather. It’s still comfortable enough for us to put our feet up and easy to clean. Plus, its fun to decorate and style.
DINING ROOM – BEFORE
DINING ROOM – AFTER
Our dining room has been through many makeovers. But this one has stuck for the last couple of years. Simple DIY board and batten, my favorite table, and black chairs. No distractions, just eating and enjoying each other’s company. I think simple spaces are so much more calming and beautiful.
LAUNDRY ROOM – BEFORE
LAUNDRY ROOM – AFTER
Our laundry room was very builder-grade before. We solved one of the biggest problems in our home with a new barn door, created some extra storage, and added some function. I still have a few updates I would like to do here, but for now, this little laundry room works great.
MASTER BEDROOM – BEFORE
MASTER BEDROOM – AFTER
Our bedroom before was very dark and gray, but it needed a more modern and fresh update. I chose our bedroom as one of my first One Room Challenges and it was so much fun! But recently it got another makeover and I love it even more now. It’s hard to choose a favorite between the DIY headboard and DIY ceiling beams.
MASTER BATHROOM – BEFORE
MASTER BATHROOM – AFTER
Our master bathroom was very builder grade. I’ve made a lot of updates over the years with tile, paint, and decor. And I have a couple more projects to finish up before it’s officially done. But it has come a long way.
OFFICE – BEFORE
OFFICE – AFTER
When I first decided to make this angled portion of our hallway my office, I was all about the rustic design and details. Then a few years later, I decided to take it up a notch with more storage and function with a built-in look. I wanted it to look like it was always there and not an afterthought. And while I loved the chair I had before, I now have one that is a little more comfortable and can be tucked away when not in use.
GUEST BATHROOM – BEFORE
GUEST BATHROOM – AFTER
Our guest bathroom before was very dark, builder-grade, and lacked anything special. Out of all the room makeovers in this before and after house tour, I think this one made the biggest impact. It’s amazing what a little paint and a large mirror can do for a small room.
GUEST BEDROOM – BEFORE
GUEST BEDROOM – AFTER
As embarrassing as it is, that really was the before for the guest bedroom. It was never anything, just a storage room full of clutter and stuff I didn’t know what to do with. But I cleaned it all out, installed new floors, and created a beautiful simple guest bedroom.
We’ve made lots of changes over the years and then some more. I’m working in the kitchen now and I’m hoping it will be the best on the before and after house tour. Then, next year I will start our outdoor spaces. There is no better feeling than a home that represents you and everything love.
