This year when I was planning our witch theme Halloween decor, I immediately knew I needed a book of spells. There are several tutorials on Pinterest for these, but most are very elaborate. I wanted to create something simple using stuff I had around the house. I figured it out and I’m sharing all the details on how to make a DIY Halloween spell book. (post contains affiliate links, see disclosure)
SUPPLIES
- old or thrifted book
- toilet paper or paper towels
- mod podge
- foam paint brushes
- hot glue gun and glue
- 3-D stickers or letters
- craft paint
STEPS
- Cover the outside of the book with Mod Podge and layer on toilet paper for texture. It may rip but this adds more texture and a worn look.
- Use hot glue to create depth and designs on the book. For mine, I added lines on the spine and spiderwebs. At this step, you can also add stickers, letters, etc to create more depth and design. I added a gift tag on one of my books and put an S in the center. Then, let everything dry.
- Paint with various shades of brown, black, and gray. Dab the foam paint brush to create even more texture.
A DIY Halloween spell book is such an easy craft project and I’m so happy with how mine turned out. I had all of the supplies already, so for me this project was practically free. Get creative and use what you have! And if you would like to see a video tutorial, I shared a video on my Instagram and TikTok. Or if you don’t want to DIY, I rounded up a few to purchase at the end of the post!
