The start of the new year, putting away the holiday decor, and the slow month of January always seems like the perfect time to start organizing. In years past I have done a 31 day purge, a 10 day organizing challenge, even stopped spending for a month, and simplified my whole year with “my year of less”. But sometimes, when everything is overwhelming and the stuff is piling up – it’s hard to get started. So, I’m sharing my tips on how to get started organizing your home. DECLUTTER
Get rid of items you don’t need. It’s harsh and sometimes hard to do but you don’t want to organize items you no longer need. I’ve shared a few tips on how to cut the clutter. Remember, we are not just organizing the “stuff”. This is why one of my biggest tips is to not purchase all the pretty organizing items until you have decluttered. You will probably buy more than you need, thus creating more stuff.
START SMALL
Don’t try to tackle everything in one day. It can get very overwhelming and burnout will come quickly. Begin with one area, one room, or similar items to start. My 31 day purge challenge does just that. It’s one area or item each day and only takes a few minutes. Even if there is more you can do in that room or area, it can probably wait for another day and is on the list.

CATEGORIZE
Group similar items together to make finding things easier, remember everything has it’s place. If you are organizing your closet, group all of the shirts together, pants together, and so on. If you’re organizing the linen closet or cleaning products, put the items that function similarly together.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Once everything is decluttered and organized invest in simple storage solutions like bins and baskets to keep it all organized. These items can help maximize space and keep everything in its place. Over the years, I found ways to create pretty storage solutions and keep a lot of items out in the open and accessible without looking cluttered.

LABELS
Labeling can help you find things quickly and easily. I personally have only used this tip for labeling food items in the panty. But it works for the office, junk drawer, and even the linen closet. These sheet organizer bands are amazing and great for households that have many different sizes of sheets. Label makers are a great for shelf organization in closets and cabinets.
Having an organized home and space is one thing I really strive for. It helps me stay focused, feel better mentally, and just makes my life easier. With these tips, I hope it can also help anyone learn how to start organizing their home. Below, I’ve also shared some of my favorite organizing items.
